SPAM Your Enemy
How to avoid spam
It is not that hard to avoid spam, but you have to be careful. The first and foremost rule would be not to get your address on this site. If it did get your address on this site, this must mean you have some enemies out there. Even if you are not aware of it, someone hates you enough to put your address here.
The second thing you shouldn’t do goes a bit with the first one; do not make your email address public. So do not put it on a website that is for sure. That’s what spammers do; they send spiders on all websites searching for email addresses. Also, do not give your email address on any website meaning that if a contest requires that you enter your email there is a good chance that you will receive spam related to that. I would suggest creating an email just for that kind of stuff, so that, that address receives all the spam and not your personal address.
As a rule of thumb, disclose your email to as few people as you can, that way you’ll be sure not to receive spam.
I would also suggest using gmail instead of hotmail. I find that gmail’s spam filter is way better than hotmail’s. It’s been about 2 years since I’m with Gmail and I have hardly seen 20 spams since they all go to the spam folder. I can’t say the same with hotmail even if it’s getting better these days.
If you read your emails using outlook or outlook express, I would suggest switching to thunderbird. Thunderbird is an open source program equivalent to outlook. The difference is that every time you tell it that you received a spam it checks that spam email and it updates its rules about spam. It learns as you tell it what is and what is not spam. After a few weeks you won’t even notice you are receiving spam.
My last advice about internet in general would be to get Firefox. This will make things so much easy and so much more safe than with Internet Explorer.
